2017: Played in 5 tournaments, placing in the top-3 twice. Failed to record a win for the 2nd straight season. Finished his 15th year on Tour ranked 9th, his worst result since 2013 when he also finished 9th… Played in the season opening Charly Classic, his first tournament since having hip replacement surgery late in 2016… Finished 3rd in the Survivor Challenge, his 4th top-3 result in his last 7 Survivor starts. The tournament marked the 100th start of his career… With partner Ed Quiroz tied for 3rd at the Hooters; was 1 of only 2 teams with 1 round (the first) without carding any negative points… Made the championship round in Devil Ball for the first time in his career; finished 4th… As the #10 seed, defeated #7 Patrick Bird in the first round of Match Play, evening his career record against Bird at 1-1; lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Chris Moawad… Qualified for the Masters but did not play… Missed the Griffith Observatory Championship for the first time in 10 years.
2016: Was the only golfer to play all 9 tournaments this season. Finished the year ranked 4th, the 2nd highest position in his career… Opened the year with 4 straight top-3 finishes… Finished a career-best 2nd in the season-opening Manhattan Beach Championship. Lost to Ed Quiroz on the first hole of the tournament’s first ever sudden death playoff (dropping his career record in playoffs to 3-2); was not originally slated to play, but missed his flight out of town. Set a new personal best single round with a 33 (1st round) which also matched his career best par-27 score… Was 3rd at the Charly Classic, carding the 2nd best gross; it was his 3rd top-3 finish in his last 4 Charly Classic starts. The tournament marked the 90th of his career… As defending champions he and Chris Moawad finished runner-up in the Hooters Championship. They had no negatives on their scorecard and scored on all but 2 holes; they tied for the 1st round lead with 24 points, setting a new 1st round record. They were the 10th defending champions in 11 editions to fail to repeat… Reached the final four in the Match Play Invitational for the 2nd straight year before dropping his semi-final match to Nik Freitas 3 and 2. Defeated Gerry Vaughan in the first round for the 2nd straight year… Finished a career-best T-5th in the Devil Ball Shootout, which also marked the 95th start of his career… Became “That Guy” in the Survivor Challenge after losing an unprecedented quadruple playoff to Walter Vargas (quintuple playoff in total)… Finished 4th in the season-ending Tour Championship, his best finish since the tournament went to a longer course format.
2015: Played in 7 of 9 regular season tournaments, finishing the year ranked 6th, his 2nd highest finish in the last 7 years… Won his 4th Hooters title in his last 7 starts, placing him in a tie atop the all time Hooters wins list. He and partner Chris Moawad were the only team without negative points; they were the 6th 1st round leader in the 11 editions of the tourney to go on to win… As an 11 seed in the Match Play Invtl’l reached the Final Four (after Grigorian forfeit) for the first time in his career; he would lose his match against #4 seed Chris Moawad 3and2; his 1st round win against #6 seed, and perennial Final Four participant, Gerry Vaughan was his first win against a live opponent since 2007; the tournament was his 85th career start… After placing 2nd two years in a row, finished 4th in the Survivor Challenge… As defending champion finished 9th (of 10) in the Charly Classic and T-6th in the Griffith Observatory Championship… Qualified for, but did not play in the Tournament of Champions.
2014: Finished runner-up for Player of the Year, his best result since the Tour’s first year (2003) when he finished the year ranked #3. Played in all 9 regular season tournaments for the first time since 2008. Recorded the first multi-win season of his career… Won the Charly Invt’l, his daughter’s tournament, for the first time, defeating Patrick Bird in only the 2nd playoff in tournament history; prevailed in the tie break (closest to the pin) after he and Bird bogey’d the hole… Won the Griffith Observatory Championship for the first time after shooting a career best 45, 8 strokes below his Roosevelt average and 4 strokes better than last year’s career best 49; made par on the 3rd and 9th holes for the first time. The win, the 8th of his career, put him into a tie for 5th on the Tour’s all time wins list with Clint Crump… Finished 2nd at the Survivor Challenge for the 3rd time in the last 4 years. A win would have put him to within 16 points of EVENTUAL Player of the Year Travois Gordón with 1 tournament remaining… Qualified for the Masters for the 3rd straight year… Finished a career-best 6th at the Devil Ball Shootout… The Tour Championship marked his 80th career start… Finished a career-best T-3rd in the Tournament of Champions after a new Terranea personal-best round (45). Ended the season with a new personal best consecutive tournaments played streak (13).
2013: His jaw-dropping, 15-foot putt on the 2nd hole of sudden death won the Hooters Team Play Championship. The win was his 3rd at the Hooters (and 3rd in his last 5 Hooters starts), tying him for 2nd on the all-time Hooters wins list. His previous win was also at DeBell, the last time the Hooters visited Burbank. He and partner Patrick Bird were the only team without negative points and 1 of 3 teams with a birdie… Lost on the final hole to Walter Vargas at the Survivor Challenge for the 2nd time in the past 3 years… As defending champion finished 3rd in Las Vegas at The Players Championship… Tied for the low gross at the Masters Qualifier (the 2nd year in a row he carded the lowest score) but did not play The Masters… Tied for the tournament high in pars (3) at the Charly Invt’l… Shot a career best 49, breaking 50 for the first time, at the Griffith Observatory Championship… The Tour Championship marked the 70th tournament of his career… His victory at the Hooters was his first win in an odd-numbered year since 2003… Finished in the top-3 in 4 of his 7 regular season starts… Played in 7 of 10 regular season tournaments plus the Tournament of Champions (his first odd-numbered year appearance).
2012: Won the inaugural Players Championship in Las Vegas, the 5th win of his career, and first non-team victory in 6 years. Shot the day’s 2nd best gross, bettering all but Armen Grigorian, who was just 2 strokes lower. His now legendary performance would make him 1 of 4 Tour charter members to win in the 10th anniversary season… Qualified for the Masters for the first time in 3 years. Was the only golfer in the Qualifier to shoot a sub-40 round. Finished tied for 4th at the Masters and tied for best back-9 (37). It was a new personal best back-9 by 4 strokes. Was 1 of just 3 golfers with a birdie and 1 of 3 golfers to not shoot max on a hole… Tied for 3rd at the Griffith Observatory Championship, his best finish… The Devil Ball Shootout marked the 60th tournament of his career… Played in the Tournament of Champions for the 4th time in his career; since 2006 has only qualified in even-numbered years… Finished the season ranked 9th, his highest result in 4 years… Played in 9 of 10 regular season tournaments, the most he’s played since 2008 when he played the entire schedule.
