Career Highlights:
2022: Played just 1 tournament in his 20th and final season on Tour… Became the first Hooters champion to 3-peat. He and partner Walter Vargas became the 10th first round leaders in 16 editions, 5th in the last 6, to go wire to wire; made a 9-point improvement on the back-9 scoring on every hole; improved their 2019 winning score by 2 points; joined Chris Moawad, John Frost, Martin Witt, and Armen Grigorian as the tournament’s 4-time winners… The Hooters victory, the 13th win of his career, moved him into sole possession of 5th on the Tour’s all-time wins list.
2021: Did not play the Tour Championship, the lone event of the season.
2020: Played 2 tournaments in the Covid-affected season… Finished runner-up at the Tour Championship, losing in a sudden death playoff to Luke Wyatt. A victory would have been his 2nd Tour Championship title, but first since the Tour expanded the tournament to a long course format. His final score 86 was a new career best score at Valencia; not counting the lone Scholl Canyon edition, it was his first sub-90 round at the Tour Championship. His appearance was only his 2nd start at the Tour’s “club championship” in the last 6 years, and best result since 2012 when he tied for 2nd… Finished 6th at the Charly Classic.
2019: Completed his 17th season, playing in 6 of 7 regular season tournaments plus the Tournament of Champions. Recorded 1 victory and finished the season ranked 6th for the 2nd straight year. Briefly held the #1 spot, the first time he was ranked #1 since March of 2015… Won the Hooters for the 3rd time in his career after going back-to-back despite missing last year’s partner Chris Moawad; now becomes the 4th golfer to repeat. He and partner Walter Vargas became the 9th team in the 15 editions of the current format to go wire-to-wire, 4th in the last 5 years; he and Vargas were last paired together 10 years ago in 2009 where they finished 2nd at Van Nuys; it was his 10th top-3 finish in 15 career Hooters starts. The victory was the 12th of his career, placing him into a tie with Martin Witt for 5th all-time. He and Vargas carded the day’s only birdie, earning them the $18 birdie pot… Finished 3rd in Devil Ball, his highest finish in his last 5 Devil Ball starts; has finished 3rd each time DeBell hosted the tournament… As the #3 seed lost to #6 Ed Quiroz (first career meeting) in the Match Play Invitational; it marked his first opening match loss in his last 3 starts… Finished 5th at the Masters. From roughly 20 yards, his chip shot on the par-3 6th, bounced twice on the green and into the cup for the day’s first birdie. He would split the $9 birdie pot; carded the day’s 2nd best Devil’s Gulch (13-14-15) score (+5)… Made his first start at the Tour Championship in 5 years… Was the season’s top earner in birdie pool money with $16.50, upping his career earnings to $23.50 (5th on the all-time list). Finished 3rd at the Tournament of Champions, matching his best result at Terranea (2016)… In August became the 3rd MGM Tour member to turn 50.
2018: Played in 5 of 6 regular season tournaments, recording 1 victory and 2 top-3 finishes… With partner Chris Moawad won the Hooters Championship, his first win on Tour since the 2016 Masters. Though he won the inaugural edition in 2003, he had never won the Hooters in its current format, a span of 14 years; 1st round leaders Moawad/Crump, who scored points on every hole, became the 8th team in 14 editions to go wire-to-wire; their 37 points left them 1 point shy of the tournament record (38) and their 22 1st round points were the 2nd most in tournament history… Finished runner-up at the Masters by 1 stroke; his 80 was 3 strokes lower than his previous best set in 2016, the year he won; his front-9 37 was 4 strokes better than his previous best also set in 2016; was 1 of 4 golfers to card a birdie. Whiffed on his initial tee shot on the 3rd hole, costing him a stroke and perhaps a chance for a 2nd Masters title… Despite a career-worst 59 at the Griffith Observatory Championship, birdied the 148-yard par-3 third to win the $7 birdie pot, his first time in the money. Missed the Tournament of Champions due to an injured rib.
2017: Played in 6 of 8 regular season tournaments, and finished his 15th year on Tour ranked 5th, his best result since 2013 when he also finished 5th. Had 3 top-3 finishes but failed to post a victory for the first time in 3 years… Tied for 2nd at the Charly Classic, his best finish since completing a 3-peat in 2007… As a #5 seed defeated #4 Gerry Vaughan by a playoff tie break in the quarterfinals of Match Play. It was their first career match against one another. The victory earned him his 5th final four appearance where he would lose to #9 P-Jay Fidler… As defending Masters champion finished 4th, 3 strokes back of a 3-way tie between Patrick Bird, Martin Witt, and eventual playoff winner D. Vargas. Carded his 2nd straight sub-90 round after 90+ rounds in his previous 3 Masters starts. Had the 3rd best gross score, and was one of only 3 golfers in the 10-man field to go sub-90. Had the 2nd best Devil’s Gulch Score (+5) just 1 stroke off Walter Vargas’s top score… With partner Doug Vargas finished T-3rd in the Hooters… At Alhambra, recorded the 2nd eagle in Devil Ball history when he holed out from 45 yards on the 4th hole as part of his scramble team. He also made eagle with his scramble team in 2014 at DeBell… The Survivor Challenge marked the 100th start of his career… Missed the Griffith Observatory Championship for the 3rd time since winning in 2013… Did not play the Tour Championship for the 3rd straight year.
2016: For the 2nd year in a row finished the year ranked 7th. Played in 6 of 9 regular season tournaments plus the Tournament of Champions where he finished a career best T-3rd… Won his first Masters and 2nd career major, after defeating Walter Vargas and Ed Quiroz on the first hole of sudden death. Matched his 8-year old career best score (83). Shot a new career best front-9 41, 1 stroke lower than his previous best established in 2008. It was only the 2nd time in his 6 Masters appearances he carded a sub-90 round. Tied for 2nd most pars (6)… With partner Nik Freitas finished 3rd in the Hooters… As defending champion finished 4th at the season-opening Manhattan Beach Championship. Carded a sub-80 round for the 2nd straight year… Made his 95th career start when he played the Devil Ball Shootout… Missed the Match Play Invitational for the first time in his career after having played all previous 12 editions… Did not play the Charly Classic for just the 2nd time in 13 years… Withdrew from the Tour Championship for the 2nd straight year.
2015: Played 7 of 9 regular season tournaments, finishing the year ranked 7th… Won the season-opening Manhattan Beach Championship for the first time in his career; matched his career best MBC round (75), carding a sub-80 round for just the 2nd time; established a new single round low (35)… Tied for tournament high pars (4) in the Charly Classic where he finished T4… The Hooters marked the 85th start of his career and following the tournament moved to #1 in the player rankings for the first time in his career… Defeated Patrick Bird (1st round) on the final hole, in the 1st meeting of their careers in the Match Play Invt’l… Missed the Griffth Observatory Championship for the 2nd year in a row after winning in 2013… Missed the season-ending Tour Championship for the first time in 11 years… The Tournament of Champions (he finished 6th) marked the 90th start of his career.
2014: Played in 6 of 9 tournaments (career low) and finished the year ranked 13th (the lowest finish of his career)… Finished 4th at the Tour Championship after sitting out the previous tournament with elbow tendonitis… Playing as an alternate finished 3rd in Devil Ball, his 3rd top-3 finish in his last 4 Devil Ball starts. Following teammate Chris Moawad’s drive on the par-4 5th, holed out from 60 yards to make eagle for his team’s scramble. The tournament marked the 80th start of his career… Tied for 3rd in the Charly Invt’l, his best finish in his last 4 Charly starts; tied for best gross (34) a year after shooting a career worst score… Lost in the 1st round for the first time in his career at the Match Play Invt’l. Had a 2-UP lead with 2 holes remaining but eventually lost in a playoff against #12 Tim Joe… Did not qualify, missing the Masters for the 3rd straight year (he qualified the previous 2 years but was unable to play)… Was unable to defend his title at the Griffith Observatory Championship due to elbow tendonitis (the condition would force him to miss the Survivor Challenge as well).
2013: Won the Griffith Observatory Championship for his first win in over 2½ years. Shot a new career low (49) at Roosevelt, breaking 50 for the first time. The victory placed him 5th on the Tour’s all-time wins list… Remained unbeaten in the first round at the Match Play Invt’l.
