2013 Season 2nd Half Begins
The best player never to have won Player of the Year now finds himself 2nd on the all time career wins list (13), and with 5 tournaments remaining, Doug Vargas has a chance to tie, and even break the record for most wins in a single season (4, Chris Moawad, 2008). “I already talked to my wife about it. I come in 2nd place a lot [for] Player of the Year so I’m not going to miss another tournament,” and with a sly grin Vargas added, “so I give myself a pretty good chance to win one more. I’d like to break the [record of 4 wins in a season] and stand alone.” Following his latest victory, all that remains for Vargas to complete the career slam are the Charly Invitational, Survivor Challenge, and the upcoming Griffith Observatory Championship.
Doug Vargas’s 2-tournament winning streak (MGM Match Play Invt’l & TPC) and Patrick Bird’s (Charly Invt’l & Hooters) marked the first time in 4 years a player claimed back-to-back wins. In 2009 Vargas accomplished the feat, and 4 years prior Armen Grigorian and Clint Crump registered 2-tournament winning streaks.
5 tournaments down and Patrick Bird, John Frost, and Doug Vargas remain as the only golfers set to play in December (Tournament of Champions). Up next for the Tour, the 7th edition of The Griffith Observatory Championship. Will their tight little group remain or will another name complete a foursome?
