2017 Player of the Year Points Standings

Gerry Vaughan – after his Tour Championship victory, and 2nd win of the season – is poised to capture the 2nd Player of the Year award of his career. He last finished the season the MGM Tour’s #1 player in 2010. His only obstacle – and it’s a formidable one at that – is defending Player of the Year Chris Moawad.  The 4-time Tour #1 is no stranger to the position of “hunter” heading into the final tournament of the season (though this year, the season concludes with the Griffith Observatory Championship).  3 of his 4 Player of the Year wins all followed the same script:

2012
Deficit: in 2nd, trailed Armen Grigorian by 1.16
Tournament result: finished the Tour Championship T-2 to Grigorian’s T-11
Outcome: finished the season 15 points ahead of Grigorian

2013
Deficit: in 2nd, trailed Doug Vargas by 11.56
Tournament result: won the Tour Championship, while Vargas finished 5th
Outcome: finished the season 5.44 points ahead of Vargas

2016
Deficit: in 2nd, trailed Ed Quiroz by 26 points
Tournament result: finished the Tour Championship T-2 to Quiroz’s 5th
Outcome: finished the season 59 points ahead of Quiroz

Will Chris Moawad pull off another come-from-behind move and win back-to-back Player of the Year awards for the 2nd time in his career?

‘Just a distant memory now’

At one point Walter Vargas’s name was so closely associated with the Griffith Observatory Championship. After winning the inaugural edition, he became the tournament’s first 2-time winner 4 years later.  Vargas, though, won’t be playing this year, marking the 5th straight year he will not be tee’ing it up at Roosevelt.  5 years, or half a decade of missing a tournament he once figured so prominently in, makes for a distant memory now.  Sad.
