MANHATTAN BEACH – Victories in the final 2 tournaments of 2015 had Ed Quiroz fired up for the 2016 season.  The Tour’s youngest golfer at 35, is off to a rousing start after winning the Manhattan Beach Championship Saturday. “I hate to keep sounding brash,” said Quiroz of his 3rd straight win, “but that’s the plan. I wanna keep winning and take control of things.”  Quiroz, who was playing in his first MBC, defeated John Frost on the first hole of sudden death in what was the first playoff in tournament history.

2016 opens with a whimper

Just 7 golfers made up Saturday’s field, the worst showing since the 2004 Tour Championship when 7 of the 9 golfers on Tour made the start.  5 golfers, in the final 12 hours alone, withdrew from Saturday’s tournament.  But those in attendance were treated with the return of Armen Grigorian who made his first appearance in 10 months.

QUICK CHIPS

Record-tying: Quiroz became just the 2nd golfer in Tour history to notch 3 wins in a row. Armen Grigorian first accomplished the feat, winning the 2006 Tournament of Champions, then opening the 2007 season with 2 straight wins… All in the finish: Quiroz closed with a birdie on 17, par on 18, and a par on the sudden death playoff hole… Icing on the cake: Quiroz nabbed a share (Moawad) of the $25 birdie pot with a birdie on the 2nd to last hole… No rust here: Armen Grigorian returned after missing all but 1 tournament (Hooters in March) last season. His ball striking was at its typical elite level. He would finish the day with 11 bogeys, 1 shy of the tournament record… Leader: Chris Moawad carded a tournament high 8 pars, 5 on the first round alone… MBC Career best: John Frost set a new personal best single round with a 33 (1st round).
