WESTWOOD – Heroes Golf Course, dedicated to helping veterans, played host to the Tour for the first time Saturday. While their fellow competitors struggled in the unfamiliar surroundings, the team of John Frost and Chris Moawad scored points on all but 6 holes and avoided any negative points (the only team to do so) to win this year’s Hooters Championship. The win was Frost’s record-tying 4th in his last 7 Hooters starts, and partner Moawad’s first in 8 years. “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast,” said a beaming Frost of his team’s consistent round. After 8 points on the front 9 they scored an additional 12 to stave off a hard charging Witt/Freitas team. “I knew if we were both playing the golf we can that we could win or be right up in contention, and we both did very well today,” said Moawad after winning the Hooters for the 2nd time in his career.

QUICK CHIPS:

Hidden oasis: A circuitous route to the course may have had the Tour scratching their heads, but they were pleasantly surprised with what they found… Hot one: The 92 degree temps in Westwood broke the previous record high of 84… Curse continues: Defending champions have it hard enough when they actually play the following year, but Armen Grigorian’s partner Travois Gordón was a late withdrawal because of illness… Lose-lose: Grigorian was paired with Clint Crump, who also lost his partner (Ed Quiroz) last minute. They would finish last… New records: Witt/Freitas set a new tournament record for most 2nd round points (18) and biggest 1st to 2nd round turnaround (19 points); their back-9 birdie was the only birdie of the day. Bird/Fidler set a new record for single round futility (-6 points). John Frost’s latest win ties him with Martin Witt for 1st on the all time Hooters wins list… A win is a win: Frost/Moawad’s 20 points was the lowest winning point total in Hooters history… Wire to wire: Frost/Moawad became the 6th 1st round leader to go on to win in the 11 editions of the tournament… Milestones: Tim Joe made his 90th career start while Clint Crump made his 85th.
