Defending Champ Wins Shortened MBC; Commissioner Called ‘Gutless’
MANHATTAN BEACH – Spooked by the prospects of a heavily delayed 2nd round, the 2014 season opening Manhattan Beach Championship was shortened to a single round. After scores were doubled and handicaps applied, defending champion Doug Vargas emerged the winner for a record 3rd time in the past 4 years. “I want to dedicate this to my sister Jen,” said Vargas, who had hoped for a win after forgetting to call his sister on her birthday. But when asked if the abbreviated round lessened the win Vargas responded, “I gotta say it does, but you know, [the majority] voted to [end after 9]. That’s the only thing I’ll take with it.” Those in the minority voiced their displeasure with the decision to cut the round short. “I would have rather played because it opened up so many other little side controversies,” said Chris Moawad. “I would have just [kept] it the same. We play like we always do, then there’s no questions. It was a hollow victory.” “I think it’s great,” remarked Patrick Bird. “In fact maybe we should just forgo the golf from now on and just go eat lunch and get together like a bunch of old pussy ass’d f–kin broke down senior citizens. Maybe that’s the way to go. Everybody’s getting old, and they got kids, and they’re always crying and whining and complaining. It’s a little disappointing to see the Tour has come down to this sort of level.”
‘The commissioner is kinda gutless’
If the shortened round wasn’t enough to cast a pall over Vargas’s win, the decision by the Tour commissioner to not assess him a penalty for arriving late exacerbated matters. Without the penalty Vargas was able to win his 3rd Manhattan Beach Championship. Despite the commissioner’s explanation – Vargas was bringing the trophy – the decision to give Vargas a pass drew the ire of the Tour members:
“You open it up for anarchy now. There’s gonna be no adherence to the rules. Not only did [Doug] not get penalized, he didn’t get penalized and won the tournament because of it. I think it’s a sad day for the tournament.”
-Gerry Vaughan
“It’s been the rules before and people have been penalized before, and now because he brought the trophy, he’s not? It’s a bunch of B.S.”
-Walter Vargas, who would have won had Doug been penalized
“Doug is the SEC. The rules don’t apply.”
-Travois Gordón
“I think they should have assessed the penalty for being late. Once again the commissioner shows that rules are only enforced for other people, and certain people, you know, get away with stuff. The commissioner is kinda gutless at this point, but you know, whatever.”
-Clint Crump
“I think he should have been penalized. Not just because he won, I just think that’s the rule. The rule is there for a reason, so if we start making concessions, or if it’s not enforced, it’s going to snowball to where it becomes a problem.”
-Chris Moawad
“If [he] wanted to win, you gotta win better than [how] he won.”
-Armen Grigorian
“I think we gotta stick with the penalties, otherwise the rules are going to go by the wayside, and then no one’s really gonna care, and [the commissioner] will start showing favoritism to someone who had already won, who should be here on time by the way.”
-P-Jay Fidler
“Well, because it’s Doug I think it’s a travesty. I think it’s terrible. If it’s me, well, you know, it’s not so bad. It’s alright.”
-John Frost, who has benefited in the past from the non-enforcement of the rule.
“I thought it was a little bogus as did everybody else.”
-Rene Quiroz
“Doug snuck out a win and I feel bad for the other people that were in the race and in the hunt for [the win].”
-Patrick Bird
“So will this mean free reign for Bird to show up late to the Charly Invitational and be OK because he’s got the trophy? It’s a can of worms. Look, if it was Rene or me and that happened, I’d be like hey, yea, let it pass man because we don’t win. Vargas, he wins every f–kin other tournament. F–k him dude.”
