2014 MASTERS RESULTS

GORDÓN’S DREAM SEASON CONTINUES
Masters Victory, His 2nd Major

The 10th edition of The Masters, fittingly, did not disappoint. History was made and the ascendency of a player confirmed.

Travois Gordón, winner of this season’s first Major (Match Play) won his 2nd Major after shooting a career best 77. His playing partner Patrick Bird accurately described Scholl Canyon’s back-9 as the place where champions are made. Gordón capped off his career best back-9 36 with a birdie.

Could there have been a better or more fitting tournament than The Masters for the MGM Tour to have its first hole in one? Like a professional, Chris Moawad’s tee shot on 11 landed above the hole, spun back, and dropped into the cup. It was his first ever hole-in-one.

With each passing tournament Rene Quiroz’s 2012 Masters performance was looking less like a source of inspiration and more like a burden. But with his best golf since, and another runner-up finish this year, the golf gods have dangled that carrot once again.

3 victories – 2 of them Majors – has Travois Gordón experiencing a magical season, the success of which he attributes to preoccupation – the upcoming birth of his first child and the purchase of his first home. The great Bobby Jones once said “golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course… the space between your ears.” Evidently, not having golf on one’s mind has served Gordón well.

QUICK CHIPS

The “Double”: Travois Gordón joins Chris Moawad (2008) as the only golfers to pull the Match Play-Masters double… Hole-in-one trumps all: Travois Gordón, Tim Joe, and Ed Quiroz made birdie but Chris Moawad took the birdie pool ($21) with his hole-in-one… Devil’s Gulch (holes 13-14-15): Travois Gordón and Chris Moawad top scores (+2), followed by John Mann and Ed Quiroz (+3)… The Good: Chris Moawad (73) and Travois Gordón (77) the only golfers to go sub-80. Doug Vargas, tournament-high 6 pars. Every golfer carded at least 1 par. Chris Moawad (37) only golfer to break 40 on the front-9. 3 golfers went sub-40 on the back-9: Moawad and Gordón (36), D. Vargas (39). Doug Vargas (80) best round since 2008 when he shot 77. Moawad tournament-high 10 bogeys… The Bad: John Frost (10th), Martin Witt and Patrick Bird (13th) only golfers to card 10’s. Doug Vargas, penalized 1 stroke for missing check-in time in the first 5 minutes… Personal Bests: Travois Gordón’s 77 was 7 strokes lower than his previous best. His back-9 36 was a new career best by 9 strokes. Chris Moawad’s 73 matched his career best, last scored in 2008. Rene Quiroz established a new career best front-9 by 4 strokes (40). John Mann matched his career best back-9 (40). Patrick Bird (4th) and Martin Witt (8th) were new personal Masters bests… The “other” Quiroz: Ordinarily 7th place may not be noteworthy, but Ed Quiroz’s 84 in his Masters debut, confirms he is a future contender in not just the Masters but for the Tour in general.
