BIRD, E. QUIROZ LEAVE NO DOUBT
Fidler Comes Up Short
MONTEREY PARK – Averaging 42 in his last 3 Monterey Park rounds, P-Jay Fidler needed a 42 (plus a tie-break) or a sub-42 round to guarantee passage to this year’s Masters. Last night a triple-bogey on the final hole had him finishing with a 43 and outside the Masters cut line for just the 2nd time in his career. Clint Crump, averaging 40 in his past 3 rounds, finished with a 45.
6 nights earlier Patrick Bird and Ed Quiroz shot the low gross of the qualifier (Bird, with his 4 stroke handicap, won the night). Not to be outdone by his younger brother, Rene Quiroz also qualified. Following last night’s results, Griffith Observatory winner John Frost breathed a sigh of relief having been perilously close to the cut line.
