FROST-y START TO SUMMER
Frost Claims Griffith For 2nd Win of the Year

ROOSEVELT, Griffith Park – Last year John Frost broke 50 for the first time at Roosevelt. This year he went 4 strokes better (45), and par’d the 3rd and 9th holes for the first time, to win his first Astronomers Monument trophy. “I’m sorry everybody had to waste their morning because I kinda knew that was gonna happen,” quipped Frost. His Griffith victory – and Charly in February – gave him the first multi-win season of his career. Asked to explain shooting 8 strokes below his Roosevelt average, Frost pointed to a book for his recent turnaround. “I read this book called, The Golfer and the Millionaire. That’s really what happened, truly. [It says] the game of golf is about love and it’s about your mind.” Love for his fellow Tour mates, however, might not be included as Frost’s parting words were, “See ya LOSERS.”

QUICK CHIPS

Rollover: No golfer carded a birdie so the newly introduced ‘Birdie Pool’ went unclaimed, with the $11 pot rolling over to The Masters… Beat The ‘Pro’: For the 2nd straight year Scott Joe (gross-37) defeated the MGM Tour… Streaks: P-Jay Fidler par’d the 310-yard par four 6th for the 3rd year in a row; Doug Vargas broke his streak of 8’s on the 6th (3 years in a row) and 8th (4 years) with bogeys. His gross-44 was his best score in his last 5 starts; Patrick Bird’s triple bogey finally ended his misery on 2 in which he had never shot lower than 8. Bird, who finished a career-best 3rd in the Griffith, shot 1 off his career best; After struggling early on Martin Witt rebounded by bogeying 4 of the final 5 holes… New Tour Threat? Tour rookie Ed Quiroz carded an impressive 44, tying for 2nd best gross behind Armen Grigorian (43)… The Other John: Also carding a career-best at Roosevelt (45) John Mann said of his 3 stroke improvement, “You know what, I don’t wanna be one of those guys that complain about handicaps, but all I’m saying is, I think my chances of winning this have just completely gone away now because I did so well today.” Milestones: Charter member Patrick Bird made his 80th career Tour start; Gerry Vaughan his 70th, and P-Jay Fidler, 65th. Defending champion Clint Crump was a last minute withdrawal (elbow).
