MAN TO BEAT?
No disrespect to defending champion Clint Crump, but if trends are to be heeded, Travois Gordón is the odds-on favorite to win this year’s Griffith Observatory Championship. Beginning in 2007 Gordón has uncannily alternated competitive seasons (even-numbered years) with unproductive seasons (odd-numbered years), and his two Griffith wins (Walter Vargas is the only other 2-time winner) have come in the last 2 even-numbered years. With 2 wins this season, and a #1 ranking, Gordón is already fulfilling his scheduled “good” season. So will he – and the trends bare this out – continue his Griffith Park streak in 2014? Notables: 2-time champion Walter Vargas will miss his 2nd straight Griffith. 2013 Player of the Year Chris Moawad will also miss this year’s tournament, ending the Tour’s 2nd current longest consecutive tournaments-played streak (10).
