Walter Vargas’s 3-year reign at the Survivor ended in heartbreaking fashion when an unplanned trick shot – thanks to a divot – sent his dreams of a 4-peat down the drain. Chris Moawad, the last man to win before Vargas’s streak, took home his 2nd Survivor trophy.

This year’s edition is rife with compelling storylines. Defending champion Chris Moawad is without a win. The window is closing for the 2012 Player Of The Year to avoid being just the 3rd winner of the award to go winless the following season.
4-time champion Walter Vargas, who practically owns this tournament, enters without a win this season. There is no better tournament to end Vargas’s 21-month, 14-tournament winless streak.
A suddenly hot Armen Grigorian faces his nemesis, the one major obstacle in the 3 remaining tournament victories towards completing the career slam.
With a tenuous hold on the top spot of the player rankings Doug Vargas is hoping to avoid last year’s scenario between then #1 Armen Grigorian and #2 Chris Moawad. After the Survivor in which Moawad won and Grigorian suffered an early exit, Grigorian’s lead was reduced to a mere 1.2 points. He would lose Player Of The Year to Moawad at the season-ending Tour Championship.
