LAS VEGAS – The 2013 season is shaping up marvelously for Doug Vargas. Saturday, the 7-year veteran collected his 2nd victory in a row, and 3rd of the season after winning the Players Championship. “This year’s been everything I wanted it to be. I got off the surgery. I wanted to prove to myself more, and everyone and my wife that I can play golf, enjoy myself with the guys and still compete out there, injured or not, pre or post [surgery].” Vargas’s 3rd win of the season marked the 2nd time (2011) he’s posted a 3-win season, a feat only 3 others have done. “[The victory is] so sweet. I love Vegas. I love golfing in Vegas, I love the guys I play with so it’s the trifecta, the best thing ever.”

Saturday’s tournament was not only the exact 10-year anniversary of the Tour’s very first tournament, but it would also be the first time in Tour history a non-team event was contested on a regulation 18-hole course. Prior to the round Doug Vargas expressed trepidation, admitting he hadn’t swung his driver in some time. But the veteran, who has always had a grasp of the mental aspect of the game, quickly cast those fears aside. “Golf is about being at peace, and relaxed and letting the muscle memory flow. My first swing was 200 yards [to] the fairway and I relaxed after that, and boom it just came naturally. It was a lot of fun.”       P-Jay Fidler, who has always called for longer courses, seemed to validate those desires by finishing 2nd. “I think we all did pretty good. The course was kind, and also very mean at times, but it’s nice because MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAyou get to come out and actually play [complete] golf. It’s nice to play 9 holes every now and then but when you’re shooting your driver and you come in and you’re exhausted, you’re like we PLAYED, we actually PLAYED.” The fact that he was beat out by Vargas was not lost on Fidler. “I find myself losing to Doug. This is the second time I think in the last 2 tournaments so I gotta do something with that guy. I shoulda took him out last night now that I’m thinking about it.”

Vargas: “Tournament aside it was just a really good time playing with a bunch of cool guys. It was fun. You know we forgot we were in a tournament.”
