DEAL WITH THE DEVIL(?)
Grigorian Loses 2 Devil Balls, Successfully Defends
ALHAMBRA – With his season shaping up to be the worst of his career Armen Grigorian proved the doubters wrong when we won The Masters. Sunday, he not only won his 2nd tournament in a row, he successfully defended his Devil Ball title. Normally unforthcoming, Grigorian was this time, sincerely at a loss for words, likely due to the fact his play with the Devil Ball was so dreadful. Not once, but twice he lost the Devil Ball, costing his team 8 penalty strokes. He would finish +15, more than his teammates combined. “I felt like I totally betrayed my team. I was completely done. It felt like 3 years ago where I was repeatedly holding my team back and I felt terrible.”
The Fidler Script
Despite his dismal contribution with the Devil Ball, Grigorian’s team won the team portion by 2 strokes, and reminiscent of P-Jay Fidler’s victory in 2011, Grigorian’s fortunes totally reversed in the individual play segment. His birdie and 2 pars gave him the best championship round score and a 3-stroke victory over John Mann. With its combination of team and individual play, the Devil Ball Shootout was such an elusive prize Grigorian thought he’d win his nemesis, the Survivor Challenge, before he ever won the Devil Ball Shootout. Now he’s won 2 of them, back-to-back.
